Why have you decided to come to Orion? I now understand that I don’t really know why I chose to come. Partly I of course wanted to work and play and help with children. I wanted to learn Russian. I wanted to understand how a rural community, so devoted to the “group” or “collective” really worked in reality. I wanted to better understand Russian people, a Russian way of life. I’ve always been fascinated by Russian history and philosophy and literature and I thought I would better understand these things by living in a community in Russia. I wanted to learn to ways of living and sharing and raising children. I’ve learned and understood all of this, but I now see there was something very personal in my coming to Orion, and I feel I’ve realized many things about myself. Did you find what you were seeking for in Orion? Indeed I have found what I was seeking for, both for myself and for others. I’ve loved being in this community, working and playing and learning and teaching and eating and sleeping and wondering with all the people who make Orion the environment it is. I love staying here, being able to watch and help the children develop and being able to help cook food and clean up and weed trees and paint the new house. It’s such a wonderful, warm, inviting environment and I’ve loved being a part of it. I wish that, even though I’m a foreign volunteer who is only here for three months, I could have been a little more involved with the community, I wish we had been to meetings, to know more of what was going on here and why.

Why have you decided to come to Orion? I came to Orion to work with the children and study Russian. I chose Orion because of the alternative aspect in relation to state-run orphanages. I wanted to spend my summer somewhere where the people love the children and give them a second chance at life. Did you find what you were seeking for in Orion? I definitely found Orion to my liking, but it is not how I expected it would be. I thought it was more like an orphanage and the adults did not take “parental” roles, just guardians. I love staying here! I already want to return and be here for longer. I know being a 3-months volunteer here is difficult for forming relationships, and I hope to be more of a friend than a summer volunteer. |

Why have you decided to come to Orion? I was interested in Russia through studies in political philosophy and international relations at University. I then wrote an Honours dissertation on Russian politics in the post-soviet era. It was difficult at times relying only on translations of academic articles and I wanted to learn Russian so that I had the option of pursuing a doctorate (PhD) in this area. I am also actively involved in social organizations in Australia, of most interest to me was children. In my case I worked particularly with children with learning and intellectual disabilities, especially autism. It thus seemed the perfect choice to come to Orion. Did you find what you were seeking for in Orion? My goals have changed as when I decided to come, I wanted to come foe a year, but the visa only allowed 3 months. It has been a great experience, I find the children absolutely wonderful and working with them was a highlight. I also really enjoyed the practical work and Katya has been a wonderful volunteer co-ordinator. I really loved getting to know all the Russian volunteers. I think we had many meetings about the work for that day, but I think more long term discussion over the type of work, goals of the 3 months period would be helpful. For example prioritizing the work type and allowing room for us to initiali suggestions. I think it would be great to feel as if our work and contribution here is really appreciated in terms of the time expense and effort to come and I hope that it is! |

Why have you decided to come to Orion? I decided to come to Orion for two reasons. The first was that as a result of my two previous trips to Russia I fell in love with the country and I wanted to live here. The second reason is because I have seen the state of Russian orphanages (my brother and sister are adopted) and how poorly equipped to work with children they are, and I therefore thought Orion was a very unique community, because of the fact that they take children from orphanages and provide them with new opportunities. Did you find what you were seeking for in Orion? I believe that I have found what I have been seeking in Orion and much more. I came to Orion with a specific goal in mind but I’m going to leave here with so much more accomplished for me personally. I liked staying here very much and getting to know and be involved with the children; however it has taken a long time for me to feel accepted by the community and to a certain extent I still feel as if I’m not accepted. It has been difficult particularly with the adults to interact because they have a very “defensive” attitude towards the volunteers and don’t attempt to assimilate us into the community. |
